UHD (ultra-high definition) technology has gained increasing popularity with the development of broadcast & TV industry in recent years. From front-end production systems to TV terminals, the UHD technology has gradually shifted from early tentative ideas to mature industrial applications. The early UHD scheduling systems used to adopt four cables and one UHD channel for transmission, which imposed severe restrictions on the system in terms of construction, operability, and system performance. After official publication of SMPTE2110 standard and in view of the rapid evolution of high-bandwidth network devices (25G/40G/100G…), IP-based UHD signal scheduling and processing systems will be the natural technical trends for TV media industry.
Project Background
The 23th Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, Korea in February 2018, during which massive UHD and HD signals will be generated. The UHD/HD general mobile control system from CCTV will be responsible for signal scheduling tasks, covering on-site, IBC, and CCTV front-end production systems as well as signal return to the headquarters. Considering the rigid demand for UHD signal scheduling, easy and feasible deployment of mobile system, and standardization of non-compressed UHD IP system, CCTV plans to build China’s first IP-based UHD/HD signal scheduling and processing system by taking the rebroadcasting opportunities for this event.
System Overview
CSS Group has the honor to cooperate with CCTV to participate in construction of this scheduling system, which is highly representative in Chinese or even the global market. By joining hands with world leading technical players such as IMAGINE and CISCO, CSS Group is building the world best IP-based UHD/HD signal scheduling and processing system for CCTV.
● Fully comply with SMPTE 2110 standard and follow IP development trends in broadcast & TV industry.
● The core audio & video processing device SNP provides one-stop solutions for processing & conversion of SQD/2SI/12G/3G and IP ST2110/2022-7/6 audio & video signals.
● COTS switches geared to the needs of broadcast & TV industry and a universal / open architecture in compliance with mature IT standard are used to achieve more powerful interconnection capability.
● Online expansion of leaf spine structure is supported.
● Complete and visualized security management and signal monitoring mechanisms are available.
Core IP physical routing of the whole system is achieved with CISCO NEXUS series, a data center grade 100G switch system designed for broadcast & TV applications. It can work in conjunction with other products like IMAGINE SDNO mixed scheduling management system and Tektronix non-compressed oscilloscope to realize complete flows of the scheduling system. The system, fully in compliance with the newly enacted SMPTE 2110 standard, will become the first UHD/HD scheduling system in line with SMPTE 211 in China. To address various complicated application needs in existing UHD/HD environment, the system adopts the latest 8-channel 4K signal processing platform Selenio Network Processor from IMAGINE as the processing core. Meanwhile, to enable monitoring of various signal types, the non-compressed EPIC IP/4K picture splitter based on a micro service architecture from IMAGINE is also adopted.
IMAGINE Selenio Network Processor serves as the core processing unit for this project. Designed in full compliance with SMPTE2110 standard and with a brand new hardware architecture, it features a performance 10 times better than traditional signal processors. The 100G interfacing and exchange device enables perfect access by various models including SQD/2SI//12G/3G, ST2022-6/7, and ST2110 to accomplish various audio & video processing needs. Featuring the highest single IP port throughput and processing capacity in broadcast & TV industry, it is known as the most advanced broadcast & TV signal processor around the world.
